ESSAY CONTEST
Write a short essay on one of the following two topics below. There will be two category levels for separate judging: grades 6-8 (an essay up to 200 words) and grades 9-12 (an essay up to 300 words). Please submit the essays double-spaced, using a 12 point font.
Topic 1. Communities who have experienced genocide use the phrase “Never Again!” Answer the question, “What does the phrase Never Again! mean to me?”
Topic 2. The theme of the Walk to End Genocide is “Do Not Stand Idly By.” Answer the question, “What does Do Not Stand Idly By mean to me?”
WINNERS: The students who have written the top 3 papers submitted in each of the two grade level categories, and their teachers, if present, will be called to the stage at the Walk for recognition and will receive a certificate and prize to be determined. The student who wrote the top essay selected in each of the two grade level categories then will be invited to present his/her paper from the stage before the Walk and each will receive an additional cash prize. Each essay submitted by a participating class will be placed on the JWW website, jww.org, for viewing after the Walk.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE: Eligibility is open to public, private, or religious school classes whose teacher (1) has agreed to assign the essay and (2) has selected the top 3 for submission to Walk organizers for judging by a select panel of educators and anti-genocide activists.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE: Submissions must be made by April 3rd. Essays may be sent electronically to walk@jww.org or mailed to JWW at the address below marked “LA Walk to End Genocide essay contest.”
